Mr. Abdul Hayi Moomen, a veteran journalist and the Director of Public Affairs at the University for Development Studies (UDS), has launched a landmark book titled "Newsroom Poverty: The Silent Crisis in Ghanaian Journalism." At a well-attended launch event in Tamale, Moomen presented the 428-page publication, which provides an in-depth examination of the severe financial hardships and systemic challenges plaguing media practitioners across the country. The author argues that the prevailing economic struggles within the industry constitute a "silent crisis" that fundamentally undermines media independence, ethical standards, and the overall professionalism of the fourth estate.
The book meticulously details the multifaceted nature of this crisis, highlighting chronic issues such as poor remuneration, the absence of social protection, and a lack of essential resources required for effective reporting. Moomen emphasized that while journalists are expected to serve as the watchdogs of society, many are forced to operate in environments where their basic livelihoods are precarious. By documenting these conditions, the publication seeks to shift the narrative from quiet endurance to an active national conversation regarding the welfare of media personnel. Moomen clarified that his work is not intended as a critique of journalism itself, but rather as a catalyst for urgent reforms that would empower practitioners to uphold their ethical obligations without the compromises often necessitated by poverty.
High-profile stakeholders at the launch, including members of civil society, public institutions, and media practitioners, echoed the need for immediate intervention. Mr. Alhassan Suhuyini, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North and a former broadcaster, commended the work as a timely and significant contribution to the media landscape. He noted that improving the conditions of service for journalists is essential for the health of Ghana’s democracy. The consensus among attendees was that a well-resourced media environment is a prerequisite for high-quality, independent journalism that can effectively hold power to account.
As "Newsroom Poverty" begins to circulate within the academic and professional spheres, the author expressed hope that it will serve as a blueprint for policy shifts and institutional changes within both private media houses and government regulatory bodies. The launch marks the beginning of a broader campaign to ensure that journalism remains a viable and prestigious career path in Ghana. By addressing the root causes of financial instability, Moomen and his supporters aim to strengthen the media's role in national development, ensuring that practitioners can report with the courage and integrity necessary to sustain a transparent and informed public.
