Donald Trump proposes tripartite nuclear arms summit in Shenzhen

US President Donald Trump has indicated his willingness to convene a high-level meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to address the critical issue of nuclear arms control. The proposal suggests the tripartite summit could take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for November 18-19, 2026, in Shenzhen, China. This diplomatic initiative, which emerged on October 19, 2026, represents a significant attempt to manage global security risks through direct engagement between the world's most powerful leaders. While the proposal has generated international interest, the path to the summit remains under negotiation. The Kremlin has confirmed that discussions regarding the meeting are in progress, though no finalized agreement has been reached yet. The primary objective of the talks would be to establish a more stable framework for nuclear deterrence and arms regulation, addressing a period of heightened geopolitical uncertainty. Beyond arms control, the inclusion of trade stability on the informal agenda underscores the interconnected nature of security and global commerce in the current era. The potential outcomes of such a meeting are of great consequence for the international community, including nations like Ghana. Analysts point out that decisions made by the three powers regarding nuclear policy and trade stability will likely influence global markets and security architectures for years to come. As the APEC summit in Shenzhen draws closer, the focus remains on whether these preliminary discussions will transform into a substantive diplomatic breakthrough or serve primarily as a symbolic dialogue among the major powers.
