About 10 cattle have perished in the Abrewanko farming community within the Oti Region after coming into contact with a live high-tension electricity cable. The cable, which reportedly fell into a local stream three days ago, has turned the water body into a deadly hazard, sparking fears among community members about the imminent risk to human life. The incident has caused significant distress in the Krachi East area, where livestock farming is a primary livelihood.
According to Ericson Adonteng Boateng, the Assembly Member for the Katanga East Electoral Area, the cattle were crossing the stream when they were struck by severe electric shocks. The livestock were unaware that the water had been electrified by the downed power line, leading to instantaneous fatalities. This incident highlights a significant economic loss for the local herdsmen and underscores the immediate physical danger posed by the damaged infrastructure which has remained unaddressed for several days.
Mr. Boateng has issued an urgent appeal to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to intervene by isolating the power supply to the area and safely removing the fallen cable. He emphasized that the situation is a "ticking time bomb" for human casualties if not handled swiftly. The Assembly Member noted that while livestock have been the primary victims so far, the proximity of the stream to the farming community makes it a frequent path for residents, increasing the likelihood of a fatal accident.
Pending a resolution from the utility authorities, residents—particularly herdsmen and children—have been cautioned to avoid the affected area entirely. Local leaders are urging the government and ECG to prioritize the repair to prevent further loss of property or potential loss of life. The community remains on high alert as they wait for the electrical hazard to be neutralized and the safety of the local water source restored.
