Accra Ranks 18th Globally for Nightlife as Mzbel and MTN Boost Local Cultural Scenes

Accra has solidified its reputation as a premier global destination, ranking 18th in Time Out’s 2026 list of the World’s Best Cities for Nightlife. The ranking, based on a survey of over 24,000 residents and expert evaluations, placed the Ghanaian capital alongside world-class hubs like Bangkok, Berlin, and Melbourne. Accra was praised particularly for its social inclusion and affordability; approximately 75% of local respondents reported making genuine connections while out, while 62% highlighted the city’s nightlife as budget-friendly. Key districts such as Osu and East Legon were identified as central to this vibrant scene, offering a rich mix of Afrobeats and electronic music offerings that underscore the city's growing status as a significant cultural hotspot. Parallel to this international recognition, local figures and corporate partners are investing heavily in Ghana’s cultural infrastructure. Musician and entrepreneur Mzbel recently launched the Afro Essence Village in Gbawe, Accra, a new destination designed to celebrate Ghanaian art and tradition. The project aims to eventually evolve into the Gbawe Arts Centre, with Mzbel clarifying that the space focuses on cultural preservation and creative display rather than spiritual practice. Similarly, the Dagbon Traditional Council received a significant boost for the Damba Festival through a donation from MTN Ghana. Presented at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, the contribution included GH₵20,000 in cash, airtime, and beverages, reflecting a corporate commitment to honoring chieftaincy heritage and supporting community development during the celebration of the birth of Prophet Mohammed. The entertainment landscape has also seen significant success in the sectors of comedy and animal welfare. In Accra, prominent event strategist Albert Bondah successfully coordinated a high-profile comedy show for sports broadcaster Dan Kwaku Yeboah. The event, which featured industry veterans like Socrate Safo and Counselor Lutterodt, drew large crowds and received positive reviews for its high production standards. Meanwhile, in Kumasi, the "August Classic 2026" Dog Show captivated audiences by showcasing the bond between humans and their canine companions through displays of obedience and training. Show manager Delite Geli used the platform to advocate for government support in promoting responsible pet parenting, emphasizing that such events foster community responsibility and emotional well-being. These diverse developments illustrate a dynamic period for Ghana's entertainment and cultural sectors as the nation balances global leisure trends with local traditions. From the international accolades for Accra’s nightlife to grassroots efforts in arts, comedy, and festivals, Ghana continues to strengthen its cultural identity. As the capital's reputation grows on the world stage, the ongoing support from corporate entities like MTN and the entrepreneurial initiatives of local stars like Mzbel ensure that the country remains a multifaceted hub for both modern entertainment and historical preservation.
