Accra Technical University (ATU) has emerged as the winner of an inter-university debate competition organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its transition from a polytechnic to a technical university. The victory saw ATU outperform the University of Ghana (UG), which took second place, followed by the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) in third and fourth positions respectively. This milestone highlights the progress and rising profile of technical education in Ghana since the legislative shifts began in 2016.
The competition, which focused on fostering intellectual engagement and communication skills among students, provided a platform for participants to showcase their analytical and oratorical abilities. Gloria Crusader Babson, a member of the ATU debate society, attributed the institution's success to rigorous preparation and readiness. She dismissed suggestions that the university benefited from an unfair advantage by hosting the event, emphasizing that the team's performance was the result of dedicated training and merit.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Professor Felix Y.H. Kutsanedzie, underscored the importance of constructive debate in the academic environment, noting that such events are crucial for developing the intellectual capacity of students and preparing them for international challenges. Following this domestic success, the ATU debate society has expressed its intention to compete in larger forums, including the upcoming Pan-African Universities Debating Championship.
