The reconstruction of the Accra-Tema Motorway has reached a significant milestone, with 48% of the project now complete. According to the project's construction consultant, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, the current phase of the development is heavily focused on an urban highway that will serve as a service road alongside the main route. This strategic expansion is designed to alleviate the chronic congestion that has long plagued one of Ghana’s most critical economic arteries, while simultaneously upgrading the structural integrity of the corridor.
A primary objective of the ongoing works is the implementation of robust drainage infrastructure to combat the perennial flooding that disrupts travel and damages the roadway. The project includes the construction of approximately 20 culverts and three major interchanges. Ing. Bempong reported that most of these drainage systems and structural components are nearing completion, which is expected to significantly reduce the impact of heavy rains on the motorway’s passability and the safety of commuters.
Despite the steady progress, the project has faced notable challenges, particularly regarding the management of traffic diversions. Navigating construction zones has caused delays for motorists, but the consultancy team emphasized that efforts are being made to keep the motorway open and passable throughout the entire construction period. The coordination of these diversions is essential to maintaining the flow of goods and people between the capital and the port city of Tema while the heavy engineering work continues.
This infrastructure development follows a broader national focus on disaster resilience and urban maintenance. The progress on the motorway coincides with a nationwide clean-up initiative previously signaled as a response to severe flooding incidents that have impacted various parts of the country. As the project moves into its second half, the completion of the three interchanges and the full integration of the service roads remain the top priorities to ensure a modern, flood-resilient transit network.
