AFCON 2025: Egypt's Coach Hossam Hassan Praises Team Despite Penalty Shootout Loss to Nigeria

Hossam Hassan handed three-match FIFA ban for referee criticism

FIFA has imposed a three-match suspension on Egypt's national football team head coach, Hossam Hassan, following an investigation into his conduct. The disciplinary action was taken after Hassan publicly criticised officiating during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. This decision represents a significant challenge for the Egyptian side as they look to maintain their momentum in the global tournament qualifiers. In addition to the sanctions against the head coach, Egyptian forward Mostafa Zico has also faced severe disciplinary measures from world football's governing body. Zico has been handed a five-match ban, which will see him sidelined from international duties until June. This extended absence of a key attacking player adds further pressure to the Egyptian technical bench as they manage their upcoming competitive fixtures without one of their offensive options. The suspension of Hossam Hassan, a legendary figure in Egyptian football who took over the coaching reins to lead the Pharaohs back to international prominence, underscores FIFA's strict stance on maintaining respect for match officials. The disciplinary proceedings focused on verbal criticism directed at the referee during a recent competitive outing, as FIFA continues to enforce its code of conduct regarding the treatment of game officials by team staff. With Hassan and Zico both facing periods of enforced inactivity, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) must now adjust its technical arrangements for the forthcoming international windows. The loss of Zico's services until mid-year is particularly impactful for the team's depth. Despite these setbacks, Egypt remains focused on securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup, a tournament they are eager to qualify for to reaffirm their status as a powerhouse in African football.
