Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has led a formal delegation to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to demand the urgent rehabilitation of the Weta Irrigation Scheme. The petition, presented on October 12, 2026, outlines the alarming state of the facility and its impact on the local agricultural economy. Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture John Dumelo received the petition on behalf of the ministry, signaling the government’s attention to the brewing crisis in the Volta Region.
The petition highlights that the Weta Irrigation Scheme is a critical asset for rice production, supporting the livelihoods of more than 1,200 families. The delegation expressed grave concerns over the scheme's deterioration, which they argue has crippled farming activities and threatened food security in the district. In addition to the call for physical repairs, the MP and his delegation are demanding compensation for farmers who have suffered losses and a comprehensive investigation into how World Bank funds previously earmarked for the project were utilized.
In response, Deputy Minister John Dumelo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the rehabilitation of the scheme. He assured the delegation that the Ministry of Food and Agriculture recognizes the facility's importance to national food security and will work toward addressing the technical and financial concerns raised in the petition. The outcome of this engagement is expected to influence future budgetary allocations for irrigation infrastructure as the government seeks to bolster local rice production.
