Minister for Roads and Highways Governs Kwame Agbodza has assured contractors working under the government’s ‘Big Push’ Road Infrastructure programme that they will receive timely payments upon the certification of their work. Speaking during an inspection of key infrastructure projects in the Sunyani area, the Minister emphasized that the era of chronic payment delays has ended. He noted that the typical delays of two to three years experienced in the past have been addressed under the administration of President John Mahama, with streamlined processes now in place to ensure contractors are paid promptly to maintain project momentum.
During his tour, the Minister visited the Sunyani-Atronie-Acherensua Road and the Sunyani Outer Ring Road projects to assess their current status. Agbodza expressed satisfaction with the progress made on these sites and encouraged the various contractors to expedite their efforts to meet their respective completion deadlines. He highlighted that the ‘Big Push’ initiative is a central pillar of the government's strategy to improve national connectivity and facilitate economic growth through the expansion of the country's road network.
Responding to the Minister’s assurances, the CEO of Alexiboam Company Limited, the firm handling the Sunyani-Atronie-Acherensua project, pledged to complete the road ahead of its scheduled timeline. Although the project had previously faced setbacks specifically related to complex bridge construction, the contractor indicated that the guarantee of steady funding would allow for faster execution. Minister Agbodza reiterated that while the government has secured the necessary funding for these projects, it will maintain a strict stance on quality and will not tolerate subpar workmanship.
In his closing remarks, the Minister contrasted the current fiscal environment with previous years, asserting that the removal of long-term payment arrears provides a more stable and predictable environment for construction firms. He concluded that the government remains committed to finishing all ongoing projects under the ‘Big Push’ banner as part of its broader mandate to modernize Ghana's transportation infrastructure and ensure value for money in public spending.
