The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has issued a firm directive to engineers supervising government road projects to maintain strict professional independence. He emphasized that no contractor, regardless of their political affiliations or ties to high-ranking officials, should be considered "untouchable" or exempt from project specifications. This call comes as part of a broader government effort to ensure value for money and high-quality infrastructure delivery by empowering technical experts to act without fear or favor.
Speaking to the media, the Minister stressed that engineers must rely on their technical judgment and enforce contract timelines and specifications without being intimidated. He noted that some contractors might attempt to leverage personal relationships with government officials to circumvent standards or ignore delays. Agbodza urged engineers to disregard these connections and hold every firm accountable to the same rigorous standards, asserting that personal relationships should never compromise the quality of public infrastructure. He stated clearly that professional judgment must always supersede political considerations on the field.
The Minister further warned against complacency among those tasked with oversight, advocating for the uniform application of professional standards across all projects. He asserted that independent supervision is non-negotiable and that engineers should not allow relationships with senior officials to influence their actions against underperforming contractors. By maintaining an impartial stance, supervisors can ensure that public funds are utilized effectively and that road infrastructure meets the required safety and durability requirements. This directive is intended to strengthen the authority of engineers as the primary gatekeepers of quality on construction sites.
Minister Agbodza’s remarks underscore a growing emphasis on accountability and transparency within the nation's infrastructure sector. By removing the perceived shield of political patronage, the Ministry aims to foster a more competitive and professional environment for the construction industry. As the government continues its various road expansion and rehabilitation programs, the strict enforcement of these standards is expected to reduce the incidence of substandard work and ensure that the national road network supports sustainable economic growth.
