In a sharp rebuke of recent conduct by a public official, Akosua Asaa Manu, popularly known as Kozie, has issued a poignant open letter to the Ghanaian public addressing an incident involving Member of Parliament Yakubu Mohammed. The controversy centers on remarks made by the MP, who reportedly joked about marrying a young girl while addressing a group of schoolchildren. This incident has ignited a national conversation regarding the ethical responsibilities of leaders and the persistent threat of child objectification within the country.
Manu’s letter, titled "He’s not the exception. He’s the evidence," argues that the MP's behavior is indicative of a much deeper cultural crisis rather than an isolated lapse in judgment. She contends that when a lawmaker feels emboldened to make such jests in a formal setting, it underscores a systemic failure to adequately address the realities of child marriage and sexual violence against minors. The letter emphasizes that such rhetoric further marginalizes young girls in a society already struggling to curb exploitation and provide sufficient protection for the youth.
Beyond criticizing the specific remarks, Manu calls for immediate and genuine accountability from both the MP and the wider political establishment. She stresses the urgent need for robust safeguarding measures within educational and public spaces to ensure that children are shielded from predatory rhetoric and objectification. The author urges public institutions and the Ghanaian populace to move beyond passive observation and actively demand a higher standard of decorum and ethical conduct from their elected representatives.
As Ghana continues its efforts to eliminate child marriage and promote the rights of the girl child, this incident serves as a critical turning point for national reflection. Manu concludes her appeal by urging Ghanaians to prioritize the well-being and safety of the next generation over political or social convenience. The collective response to this controversy is increasingly viewed as a litmus test for the nation's commitment to protecting its most vulnerable citizens and dismantling the cultural norms that allow such behavior to persist.
