Alex Bram, the Chief Executive Officer of Hubtel, has advocated for the establishment of a national data-sharing framework to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence (AI) across Ghana. Speaking on the critical requirements for a thriving digital economy, Bram emphasized that while investments in computing infrastructure are vital, they remain insufficient without a structured approach to data management and accessibility. He argued that the current lack of a unified system for sharing information between organizations represents a primary barrier to local AI progress.
Bram specifically called on the government to introduce policy incentives that would encourage businesses to retain and share valuable data rather than deleting it. According to the Hubtel CEO, many private entities currently lack the motivation or legal clarity to preserve datasets that could otherwise train local AI models. By establishing clear guidelines for data sharing between public and private institutions, the state could create a repository of information capable of powering advanced technological solutions tailored specifically to the Ghanaian context.
The success of Ghana's planned national AI compute center was also highlighted as being fundamentally dependent on the availability of substantial, high-quality data. Bram noted that hardware alone cannot drive innovation; it must be paired with diverse datasets to be effective. These discussions are expected to take center stage at the upcoming Digital Economy Forum, where industry leaders and policymakers will gather to examine how AI can be better integrated into the national economy to foster long-term growth and efficiency.
