In a significant move to bolster local agriculture and economic resilience, the Member of Parliament for Salaga North, Alhaji Alhassan Mumuni, has distributed over GH¢24,000 in financial aid and essential farm inputs to more than 120 women farmers in the North East Gonja District. This initiative, which forms a core part of the Salaga North Women Empowerment programme, is designed to provide direct relief and strategic resources to women who serve as the backbone of the region's agricultural sector. By targeting small-scale female producers, the intervention seeks to mitigate the financial barriers that often prevent rural women from maximizing their land's potential and achieving economic independence. Each beneficiary under the scheme was provided with a cash grant of GH¢200, alongside two bags of NPK fertiliser and various agrochemicals tailored for the cultivation of one acre of land. These inputs are particularly timely, given the current economic climate where the rising costs of fertilizers and chemicals have threatened the livelihoods of many subsistence farmers. The Salaga North Women Empowerment programme emphasizes that economic independence for women is not just a social goal but a necessary component for the overall development of the North East Gonja District. Beyond the immediate crop inputs, the region is also benefiting from a broader agricultural support framework. More than 500 local farmers were recently enrolled in a poultry support programme funded by the European Union (EU). This project provided comprehensive training in modern poultry management and gifted each participant 50 poultry birds. This multi-faceted approach, combining crop support with livestock development, is expected to create a more robust and diverse food security system in the area, offering farmers multiple streams of income and nutrition. Beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude for the timely assistance, noting that the arrival of the fertilizer and funds would allow them to expand their farming operations and secure a better harvest. As Ghana continues to navigate economic pressures, such grassroots interventions in the agricultural heartlands are seen as vital for maintaining regional food supplies and supporting vulnerable populations. The MP's office has indicated that this support is part of a long-term commitment to rural development and female empowerment in the Salaga North constituency.
