AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has officially inaugurated two modern health centres—the Apitikooko Health Centre and the Dokyiwa/Binsere Health Centre—marking a significant milestone in its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP). These facilities represent a combined investment of over GH¢6.7 million, aimed at bridging the healthcare infrastructure gap within the Obuasi municipality and surrounding communities. The initiative underscores the mining giant’s commitment to sustainable community development and its strategy to improve the quality of life for residents in its operational areas by providing essential medical services closer to their doorsteps.
The Apitikooko Health Centre, the larger of the two projects, was constructed at a cost exceeding GH¢4 million. To ensure the facility remains fully functional and attractive to skilled medical personnel, the project includes dedicated staff quarters. Meanwhile, the Dokyiwa/Binsere Health Centre was completed with an investment of GH¢2.7 million. Both facilities are specifically designed to enhance maternal and child health services, addressing critical healthcare needs that have long challenged these localities. By providing localized access to primary healthcare, the centres are expected to reduce the burden on major referral hospitals and minimize travel distances for patients seeking urgent care.
Beyond the immediate health benefits, the construction of these centres played a vital role in economic empowerment. Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Ing. Samuel Boakye Pobee, noted that the company intentionally engaged local contractors for the projects. This approach was designed to build local capacity, create jobs, and ensure that the financial investment circulated within the community during the construction phase. The leadership of the mine emphasized that these projects are not isolated acts of charity but are integral to a broader vision of creating self-sustaining communities that can thrive alongside the mine's operations.
Community leaders and local residents have lauded the initiative, describing the new infrastructure as a transformative development for the region. The successful completion of these centres highlights the efficacy of public-private partnerships in addressing pressing social challenges. As these facilities begin operations, they stand as a testament to AngloGold Ashanti's long-term investment strategy in Ghana. Moving forward, the company intends to maintain its collaborative efforts with local government health authorities to ensure the facilities are adequately staffed and equipped to provide high-quality healthcare for years to come.
