Asokore Mampong Community Bank Expands to Adum as Court Arraigns Susu Collector for GH"156,455 Fraud

Ghanaian traders are being urged to embrace formal banking institutions to safeguard their earnings following the recent arraignment of a susu collector for allegedly defrauding 35 traders of over GH₵150,000. During the commissioning of the Asokore Mampong Community Bank PLC's new branch in Adum, Kumasi, traditional leaders and financial experts emphasized that formal banking remains the most secure method for protecting capital from both criminal activity and environmental hazards. The call for increased financial security comes at a critical time when many small-scale entrepreneurs still rely on informal and often unregulated savings schemes.

Nana Opoku Dwobeng II, the Adwumfourhene of Otumfuo, highlighted the physical risks of keeping cash at home or in shops, citing recent devastating floods in Accra and the Central Region where many residents lost their life savings to the elements. He noted that beyond providing security from fire and theft, banking ensures accountability and provides traders with essential access to credit facilities. This advice serves as a timely intervention for the trading community, encouraging a shift toward the formal financial sector to ensure long-term business stability and personal financial growth.

The dangers of informal savings were starkly illustrated by the legal proceedings against Martha Nana Esi Afful, a susu collector accused of absconding with GH₵156,455. Between 2023 and the end of 2024, Afful allegedly collected regular contributions from a group of 35 traders but failed to account for the funds when they matured. After a period in hiding, she was arrested and brought before the court to answer for the missing savings. This case serves as a cautionary tale for those who entrust their hard-earned money to individuals rather than regulated institutions.

While formal banking offers a safer alternative, officials noted that customers must still remain vigilant against modern threats. Francis Nantwi, CEO of Asokore Mampong Community Bank, reminded customers to stay alert to digital fraud, advising them never to share personal identification numbers or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) with third parties. As Ghana moves toward greater financial inclusion, the combination of public education, robust legal enforcement, and adherence to security protocols remains vital for protecting the assets of the nation's workforce.
