The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced Atta Kwadwo, a 30-year-old mine worker, to 14 years in prison for the defilement of an eight-year-old girl. The conviction follows a trial presided over by His Honour Isaac Appiatu, which concluded that the prosecution had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The court determined that the severity of the offense warranted a custodial sentence in line with the provisions of the Criminal Code. The incident occurred on July 10, 2026, in Manso Kumpese, a community within the Ashanti Region. According to the facts presented during the trial, the victim's mother discovered the assault and immediately raised an alarm, which led to Kwadwo's arrest by local authorities. A subsequent medical examination conducted on the young girl provided critical evidence for the prosecution, as the medical report confirmed physical injuries and trauma consistent with the sexual assault. Despite the evidence, Kwadwo maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings and denied the charges brought against him. However, the court found his defense unconvincing in the face of the testimony and medical documentation presented. In delivering the sentence, the judge emphasized the need to protect minors and the legal consequences of such acts under the Criminal Offences Act. Kwadwo has now begun his 14-year term, marking the conclusion of a case that has drawn significant attention within the Amansie South District.
