The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced 30-year-old mine worker Atta Kwadwo to 14 years in prison in hard labour for the defilement of an eight-year-old girl. The sentencing, which took place in the Ashanti Region, follows a trial where Kwadwo was found guilty of the offense under Section 101 of the Criminal Code. The court's decision emphasizes the severity of crimes against minors and seeks to provide justice for the victim and her family.
The incident occurred on July 10, 2026, in the community of Manso Kumpese. According to the prosecution, the victim was assaulted near a local bathhouse. The crime came to light when the girl's mother, becoming concerned after checking on her daughter, discovered the assault in progress. She immediately alerted her husband, and their swift action led to the identification and subsequent arrest of the suspect by the local authorities. A medical examination conducted shortly after the report confirmed the assault, providing crucial physical evidence for the prosecution.
During the court proceedings, Kwadwo denied the charges brought against him. However, the Bekwai Circuit Court found the testimonies and the medical report to be sufficient evidence of his guilt. The presiding judge, in handing down the 14-year sentence, noted that such acts carry heavy penalties to serve as a deterrent against the abuse of children. The convict has since been transported to begin serving his prison term, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in a case that has shocked the Manso Kumpese community.
