Tragedy in Avenor: Two Dead as Major Fire Ravages Duraplast Warehouse in Accra

A devastating fire at the North Industrial Area in Avenor, Accra, has claimed the lives of two people, including a two-week-old infant, while destroying a PVC warehouse and numerous surrounding structures. The blaze broke out early Thursday morning at the Duraplast facility, sending thick plumes of black smoke across the capital and prompting a massive emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Service, and the military. While the GNFS received the initial distress call at approximately 7:18 am, the fire intensified throughout the morning, requiring hours of intensive effort to bring under control.

Firefighters encountered significant operational hurdles due to the presence of haphazardly placed wooden kiosks and structures that obstructed access to the heart of the blaze. In a desperate bid to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to the neighboring Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) office and other industrial facilities, the GNFS was forced to demolish several structures to create access paths. Eyewitness reports suggest the fire may have been triggered by a gas cylinder explosion, though official investigations into the exact cause are still ongoing. The intensity of the fire was so great that it took until 11:00 am for the situation to be significantly stabilized.

In a separate incident on the same day, firefighters from the Legon Fire Station were called to Akweteyman at 10:20 pm to battle a domestic fire near the 1Living God Preparatory School. The blaze completely gutted a three-chamber-and-hall apartment, destroying all personal belongings within. However, the swift response of the fire crew prevented the flames from reaching twelve adjacent apartments. Unlike the Avenor tragedy, no casualties were reported in the Akweteyman incident, which was fully extinguished by midnight.

These back-to-back incidents have renewed calls for enhanced fire safety measures and better infrastructure planning in industrial and residential enclaves. Regional fire authorities have previously emphasized the need for stronger partnerships between the private sector and emergency services to improve operational efficiency and equipment availability. As the GNFS continues its investigations into both the Avenor and Akweteyman outbreaks, residents and business owners are being urged to exercise extreme caution and ensure they have functional fire-fighting equipment on hand to prevent future tragedies.
