Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg, a Pan-Africanist, has called for the establishment of a Christian-led funding and accountability framework for the completion of the National Cathedral project. In an open letter addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, Mr. Aziginaateeg emphasized the need for a transparent and sustainable financing model to ensure the project's success. This proposal follows a government directive indicating a potential handover of the project by October 31, 2026.
Central to the proposal is the creation of a Special National Cathedral Construction Fund. This fund would be designed to receive voluntary contributions from a wide range of donors, including individual citizens, religious organizations, and the Ghanaian diaspora. To maintain public trust, Mr. Aziginaateeg recommended the formation of an independent oversight board. This body would be tasked with managing the funds and ensuring that all financial information is regularly published for public scrutiny.
Beyond financing, the proposal advocates for a more inclusive governance structure. Mr. Aziginaateeg urged the government to engage in extensive consultations with major Christian bodies in Ghana. Such dialogue is intended to solidify the project’s ownership framework and establish a governance model that reflects the religious and national significance of the cathedral. He believes that a collaborative approach between the state and the Christian community will provide the necessary moral and financial support for the project's final phase.
The National Cathedral project has faced significant public debate over its funding and management in recent years. By shifting toward a model based on voluntary contributions and independent oversight, Mr. Aziginaateeg argues that the project can move forward without placing undue strain on the national budget while enhancing accountability. As the October 2026 deadline approaches, the proposal serves as a potential roadmap for the Mahama administration to address the concerns surrounding the landmark development.
