A significant cyberattack has paralyzed two major government departments in Berlin, leaving employees unable to perform their duties and sparking concerns over a potential breach of sensitive data. The breach targeted the city’s central cyber network, specifically affecting the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing, and the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment. According to official reports, the intrusion was severe enough to necessitate the immediate disconnection of these departments from the state network as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread of the malicious activity.
The operational impact of the hack has been described as crippling for city staff. Employees in the affected administrations have reported a total loss of internet and email access, rendering them practically unable to work. This disruption extends beyond the physical office, as the technical failure has also blocked the ability for staff to work remotely or from home. With the loss of essential digital communication tools, critical urban planning projects and transport logistics tasks have ground to a halt, highlighting the vulnerability of the city's digital infrastructure.
Forensic and criminal investigations are currently underway to determine the origin and extent of the attack. While the Berlin Senate's chancellery has confirmed the compromise of the state network, specific details regarding the perpetrators or the method of entry remain scarce. Major news outlets, including Tagesspiegel and the public broadcaster RBB, have indicated that sensitive data may have been compromised during the incident. Authorities have launched a formal criminal inquiry, though they have yet to provide a definitive timeline for when the systems will be restored or the full scope of the potential data theft.
This incident underscores the growing threat of cyber warfare and digital sabotage targeting municipal governments and critical infrastructure. As forensic teams continue their work, the situation in Berlin remains critical with no clear resolution in sight. The attack serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for robust cybersecurity protocols within public administration. For now, the German capital faces a significant backlog in urban and transport management as it works to secure its network and recover from the breach.
