Black Queens Captain Portia Boakye and Defender Susan Ama Duah Secure High-Profile Moves to Mexican League

The international profile of Ghanaian women's football continues to rise as two key members of the Black Queens, captain Portia Boakye and defender Susan Ama Duah, have secured significant transfers to the Mexican top-flight league. These moves mark a growing trend of Ghanaian talent seeking competitive opportunities in North America, following successful stints in other international leagues. The transfers come at a pivotal time for the national team players, who remain central to Ghana's aspirations on the continental stage.

Captain Portia Boakye, 37, has officially signed with UNAM Pumas Femenil for the 2026/27 season. Boakye joins the Mexican side following a productive tenure with DR Congo's TP Mazembe, where she featured in the CAF Women's Champions League. Her arrival at Pumas is intended to bolster a defense that currently sees the team positioned fourth in Group B of the domestic league. Boakye, who recently competed in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, is slated to make her debut on September 28 against Atlante.

Simultaneously, Black Queens defender Susan Ama Duah has completed a move to Tigres Femenil, signing a one-year contract. Duah joins the Mexican giants from Portuguese side Racing Power, having arrived in Mexico earlier this month to finalize the deal. A key figure in Ghana’s recent WAFCON campaign in Morocco, Duah is expected to make her first appearance for Tigres on September 28 against Atl San Luis. Her move further cements the presence of Ghanaian defenders in the Mexican league, providing a high-level environment for tactical development alongside compatriots like Grace Asantewaa.

These professional advancements at the senior level are supported by a robust developmental pipeline, as evidenced by the consistent performance of Ghana’s youth squads. In the WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup, the Black Maidens recently showcased the depth of the nation's talent pool with a commanding 6-1 victory over Niger. Despite conceding an early lead, the Maidens rallied with goals from Anita Yeboah, Daniella Abass, Zeinab Shani, Seidatu Wahab, and Sekina Amadu. This emphatic win underscores the continuous production of elite talent that eventually feeds into senior national teams like the Black Queens.
