The Black Sharks, Ghana's national beach soccer team, are set to undergo a rigorous selection process as they prepare for the 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (BSAFCON) qualifiers. Head Coach Daniel Nii Kotey has announced a nationwide "justify your inclusion" trial scheduled for September 11 and 12 at Emancipation Beach in Keta. This exercise is designed to assemble a formidable squad to face historical rivals, Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles, in a high-stakes two-legged encounter in October.
Emphasizing a shift toward strict meritocracy, Coach Kotey has made it clear that previous caps or veteran status will not guarantee any player a place in the final squad. The trials will evaluate participants based on several key metrics, including physical fitness, technical proficiency, tactical discipline, and current form. This competitive approach aims to foster accountability within the team and ensure that only the most prepared athletes represent the nation in the upcoming continental qualifiers. Stakeholders have endorsed the move, citing the need for a robust squad to challenge the best teams in Africa.
The challenge ahead is significant, as the Black Sharks must overcome a formidable Nigerian side that boasts a storied history in the sport, including AFCON titles in 2006 and 2007. The first leg of the qualifier is slated for October 9-11, with the return fixture following shortly after between October 16 and 18. The technical team believes that starting the preparation with a blank slate for all players will sharpen the competitive edge needed to overcome the Super Sand Eagles, whose venues for the matches are yet to be confirmed.
Beyond the immediate goal of BSAFCON qualification, these trials serve as the foundation for Ghana’s larger ambitions on the world stage. Successful navigation of the African qualifiers is the primary pathway to the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. By prioritizing performance over reputation at Emancipation Beach, the Black Sharks technical team hopes to build a resilient unit capable of not only qualifying for the continental showpiece but also securing a historic spot in the global tournament.
