Ghana’s U-17 national team, the Black Starlets, have seen their hopes for continental and global competition dashed following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in the semi-finals of the WAFU B U-17 Championship. The loss ends the team's pursuit of a spot in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and, by extension, ensures they will not participate in the next FIFA U-17 World Cup. Despite entering the knockout stage with momentum from a strong group-stage performance, the team was unable to overcome an early setback during the match.
The semi-final fixture was significantly altered as early as the 17th minute when Ghanaian defender Daniel Owusu was shown a straight red card. Despite the numerical disadvantage for the majority of the game, the Starlets remained competitive, controlling large portions of play and creating several scoring opportunities. However, they were unable to find an equalizer after falling behind, while the Ivorians capitalized on their advantage to secure the lone goal that decided the fixture and sent them through to the final.
Head coach Kassim Ocansey expressed profound disappointment in the outcome, describing the failure to qualify as "really painful." Ocansey noted that while the players showed resilience under difficult circumstances, the early dismissal of Owusu proved to be a hurdle too high to overcome. The coaching staff and players had been confident of securing a ticket to the AFCON, making the semi-final exit particularly difficult for the squad to process given their earlier dominant displays in the competition.
This exit extends Ghana's absence from the global U-17 stage, with the country having last qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017. The technical team and the Ghana Football Association now face the task of regrouping and analyzing the developmental path for this cohort of players as they transition to higher age categories. For Ghana, the result means at least another two-year wait to return to the pinnacle of youth football on the continent.
