The Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) has revealed that abnormal scans were detected on four containers carrying approximately 3.9 tonnes of suspected cocaine before they departed from the Tema Port. The shipment, which represents one of the largest suspected narcotics hauls linked to Ghanaian transit points in recent memory, was eventually intercepted by authorities in France. This revelation raises significant questions regarding the protocols followed at Ghana’s primary maritime hub and how the illicit cargo managed to clear port security despite the initial red flags raised during the scanning process.
Following investigations into the security lapse, six individuals believed to be connected to the massive shipment have been brought before the Kwabenya Circuit Court in Accra. According to the charge sheet presented by the BNI, the suspects are facing charges related to their alleged roles in the export of the narcotics. The court has ordered that all six individuals be remanded into custody as the investigation continues, highlighting the high-stakes nature of the case and the potential involvement of a wider network of collaborators.
The BNI's findings suggest that while the scanning technology at Tema Port successfully identified irregularities, the containers were still permitted to exit the country. This disclosure places intense scrutiny on the operational integrity of port officials and the private entities involved in the scanning and clearing procedures. As the case progresses, the focus of the prosecution and national security agencies is expected to shift toward identifying exactly where the chain of command failed and whether the alerts were intentionally ignored or if there were systemic failures in the port's reporting mechanism.
