CAF considers returning Africa Cup of Nations to two-year cycle

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is currently exploring a significant shift in its tournament scheduling, considering a return to the biennial format for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This potential move marks a departure from the current four-year cycle, which had been implemented to align more closely with international football standards and reduce the burden on players and clubs. The proposal to revert to the traditional two-year frequency is expected to be a primary focus for the CAF Executive Committee in its upcoming deliberations.

According to reports from investigative sports journalist Romain Molina, published on October 9, 2026, the continental football governing body is reassessing the benefits of the more frequent tournament schedule. The two-year cycle was a long-standing tradition for AFCON before changes were introduced to move toward a four-year interval. This internal reconsideration suggests that the leadership is looking to weigh the financial and developmental impacts of hosting Africa's flagship football event more often.

The outcome of these discussions will have major implications for national teams across the continent and the global football calendar. If the Executive Committee approves the reversal, it would necessitate a restructuring of the qualification phases and coordination with international club schedules. As the football community awaits an official announcement, the focus remains on how CAF balances the commercial interests and competitive frequency of its premier tournament with the logistical demands of the modern game.
