Police in Enugu State, Nigeria, have launched a formal investigation into the severe physical abuse of Chinenye Okonkwo, following the emergence of a viral video documenting the assault. The victim was targeted after being accused of witchcraft, a development that has sparked outrage and prompted immediate intervention from human rights organizations and state authorities. The investigation seeks to identify and prosecute those responsible for the violence depicted in the footage, ensuring that the legal process addresses the gravity of the assault. The Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW), in collaboration with the Enugu State Ministry for Gender and Women Affairs, is currently sponsoring medical examinations and treatment for Okonkwo. This intervention is part of a broader effort by AfAW to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against witch hunts and provide a lifeline for victims of superstitious violence. During a meeting with the state commissioner for Gender, the advocacy group secured a commitment for the victim’s long-term rehabilitation and social reintegration to help her recover from the trauma. AfAW has publicly expressed its support for the police probe, emphasizing the importance of a diligent legal process to ensure justice is served. The organization highlighted that the physical and psychological toll on individuals accused of witchcraft is often profound, requiring a coordinated response from law enforcement and social services. By pursuing criminal charges against the perpetrators, authorities aim to send a clear message that vigilante justice and ritualistic abuse will not be tolerated within the state. This case highlights the persistent challenges posed by witchcraft accusations in parts of the region and the critical role of social media in bringing such abuses to light. Moving forward, the Ministry for Gender and Women Affairs and its partners intend to use this incident as a catalyst for increased public education on the harms of superstitious stigmatization. The successful rehabilitation of Chinenye Okonkwo remains the primary focus for advocates as the legal investigation proceeds.
