Elina Svitolina announces separation from husband Gaël Monfils

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has announced her separation from her husband, French professional player Gaël Monfils. The announcement marks the end of one of the sport's most high-profile marriages, which began in 2021. Svitolina attributed the split largely to the significant emotional burden caused by the ongoing war in her home country, Ukraine, noting that the conflict has taken a severe toll on her personal well-being. In a statement shared on Instagram, Svitolina expressed the deep impact the conflict has had on her mental health and personal life. She explained that the "personal battles" she has faced were exacerbated by the war, leading to a decision that she must now focus on her own recovery and self-care. Despite the end of their marriage, Svitolina emphasized that the pair remains committed to maintaining their family unit for the sake of their four-year-old daughter, Skai. Parallel to the personal news, Gaël Monfils is reportedly embarking on a significant career change. The French star has confirmed his retirement from professional tennis, moving away from the sport where he became a fan favorite for his athleticism and entertaining playing style. Monfils is now set to pursue a new career path in the finance sector, signaling a complete departure from the professional tennis circuit. This development highlights the profound personal consequences the conflict in Ukraine has had on international athletes. Svitolina has been a vocal advocate for her country throughout the war, frequently using her platform to raise awareness and support. As she takes time for personal recovery and Monfils begins his new professional chapter, the global tennis community has expressed support for both figures during this period of transition.
