African scientists complete digital tools training at University of Ghana

Twenty-five early-career scientists from across Africa have concluded a specialized training program at the University of Ghana focused on enhancing sustainable natural resource management through digital innovation. The fifth edition of this Summer School, which ran from October 5 to 16, 2026, was designed to equip the next generation of researchers with advanced technological skills. Supported by Germany's Volkswagen Foundation, the initiative highlights a growing commitment to strengthening scientific capacity across the continent. The curriculum provided participants with intensive instruction in cutting-edge research methodologies, specifically focusing on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These tools are becoming increasingly essential for environmental research, allowing scientists to map natural resources more accurately and predict the impacts of climate change. By mastering these technologies, the researchers are better prepared to develop data-driven solutions for the complex environmental challenges facing their respective home countries. To complement their theoretical studies, the participants engaged in practical field visits, including a trip to the Vegetable Hub of Excellence. This visit showcased technology-driven agricultural practices and allowed the scientists to see firsthand how digital monitoring and AI can be applied to improve agricultural efficiency and sustainability. These practical sessions were designed to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world application in the field of natural resource management. Experts leading the program emphasized that ongoing investment in young African scientists is critical for fostering international collaboration and driving local innovation. By building a network of highly skilled researchers, the initiative aims to promote long-term sustainable practices across Africa. The participating scientists are expected to return to their home institutions to apply their new technical expertise, contributing to a more robust and technologically advanced scientific community on the continent.
