Dennis Miracles Aboagye Legal Battle and Ashanti Region Election Annulments Headline NPP Internal Restructuring

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is navigating a high-stakes period of internal reorganization complicated by a controversial legal investigation into one of its top communicators and the annulment of several key constituency elections. While the party reported a successful 88.7% completion rate across 245 constituencies nationwide, the process has been marred by allegations of rule breaches and violent disruptions. This period of transition is further punctuated by the political return of former National Chairman Paul Afoko, who has launched a bid to lead the party back to power under a platform of reconciliation and unity following its 2024 electoral defeat.

At the center of the party’s external challenges is the arrest of Dennis 'Miracles' Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) upon his return from abroad. The investigation centers on alleged financial irregularities amounting to GH₵55 million at the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD). Following his detention, Aboagye was granted a GH₵50 million bail, a condition his legal team and NPP allies have described as "cruel and oppressive." Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has since called for the Attorney-General to brief Parliament on EOCO’s "Rambo-style" tactics, suggesting the arrest was politically motivated to stifle Aboagye’s bid for the National Communications Director position. Conversely, the Majority leadership has defended the integrity of the investigation, asserting that public officials must remain accountable for their tenure.

Internally, the party has taken decisive action against "significant breaches" of its electoral regulations by annulling constituency executive elections in Bantama, Afigya Sekyere East, and Adansi Asokwa. These annulments follow reports of disregard for party directives and existing court orders. The situation in Afigya Sekyere East turned particularly chaotic, leading to the arrest of media personality Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, who alleged that the incumbent MP proceeded with unauthorized voting and printed illegal ballot papers. Despite these setbacks, the party is pushing forward with its global structure, recently directing all overseas branches to complete chapter elections by July 19, 2026, or face exclusion from the broader branch elections scheduled for August.

Amidst these tensions, the return of Paul Afoko to the political frontlines marks a potential turning point for the party's internal dynamics. Afoko, who was indefinitely suspended in 2015, has declared his candidacy for National Chairman, pledging to "reunite, rebuild, and recapture" power. His campaign emphasizes healing deep-seated divisions and strengthening grassroots structures to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership into the 2028 general elections. As the NPP continues to navigate these legal and organizational hurdles, the focus remains on whether the party can achieve the unity and discipline required to rebuild public confidence ahead of the next national contest.
