Concerns Raised Over Event Delays During Detty December Festivities

Entertainment stakeholders urge year-round events to ease December congestion

Industry stakeholders are calling for a fundamental restructuring of Ghana’s entertainment calendar to address the overcrowding of events during the December festive season. Often referred to as "Detty December," the final month of the year has become a period of intense activity, featuring a saturated schedule of concerts, music festivals, and parties. While this vibrancy has boosted tourism, stakeholders argue that the concentration of events creates unnecessary financial and logistical strain for the domestic audience. The proposal suggests that a more balanced distribution of entertainment activities across the calendar year would benefit both the industry and its patrons. The current model of clustering high-profile shows within a few weeks results in overlapping schedules that force fans to make difficult choices between competing events. This fragmentation often leads to diluted attendance and reduced ticket sales for many organizers. Furthermore, the high density of events in December places significant pressure on fans' disposable income and time management, potentially leading to burnout. By shifting some of these major attractions to other months, artistes can ensure their shows receive the dedicated attention they deserve without being overshadowed by the sheer volume of simultaneous activities. To achieve this balance, industry experts are encouraging artistes and promoters to collaborate on a more strategic event timeline. Planning a diverse year-round calendar would help sustain interest in the creative arts sector throughout the year, rather than relying on a single seasonal peak. This shift is expected to improve the overall quality of event production by reducing the demand for limited venues and technical equipment during the December rush. Ultimately, a more consistent schedule will provide fans with high-quality entertainment year-round while fostering a more resilient and sustainable entertainment ecosystem in Ghana.
