A devastating road accident in northwestern Côte d'Ivoire has claimed the lives of at least 14 people and left dozens more injured after an intercity bus plunged into the Bafing River. The tragic incident occurred on the Touba-Biankou road, a critical transport artery in the region, sending shockwaves through the local community and the nation. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene near Bafingdala village, where they encountered a chaotic scene of wreckage and a frantic search for survivors in the water.
The ill-fated vehicle, operated by Diarra Transport, was carrying more than 50 passengers at the time of the crash. The bus was en route from Odienne, a major town in the northwest, to the nation’s political capital, Yamoussoukro. Preliminary reports indicate that the bus veered sharply off the road for reasons yet to be fully determined, before crashing into the depths of the Bafing River. The impact and the subsequent submersion of the vehicle made it difficult for many on board to escape, contributing to the high number of casualties reported in the immediate aftermath.
As of the latest updates from rescue teams, 40 individuals have been confirmed injured, with many being treated for severe trauma and water-related injuries. However, the situation remains fluid as authorities admit that several passengers are still unaccounted for. Divers and rescue personnel are continuing their search operations in and around the river, battling currents and visibility issues to ensure every passenger is located. The injured have been transported to local clinics and hospitals, while the families of those missing gathered at the site, holding onto hope for more survivors.
This catastrophe underscores the ongoing concerns regarding road safety and transport regulation across West Africa. While the exact cause of this specific accident remains under investigation, the incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of safety protocols for long-distance transport companies like Diarra Transport. As the search for the missing continues, the government is expected to provide more details on the victims and investigate whether mechanical failure, road conditions, or driver fatigue played a role in this heartbreaking loss of life.
