Novak Djokovic has claimed the 102nd singles title of his career at the China Open following the retirement of his opponent, Alex de Minaur. The final, which had been a highly competitive encounter for over an hour, ended prematurely when De Minaur was forced to withdraw due to a left thigh injury. At the time of the retirement, Djokovic was leading 7-6 (7-3), 0-1, marking another significant milestone in the Serbian’s storied career and further cementing his dominance in the tournament.
The match lasted 68 minutes before the Australian world number eleven could no longer continue. After a tightly contested opening set that Djokovic eventually secured through a tiebreak, De Minaur sought a medical timeout to address his injury. Although he attempted to continue into the second set, he managed only one further game before acknowledging he could not compete at the required level. The result ensures Djokovic remains unbeaten in Beijing, where he has never lost a final.
This victory carries immense historical weight, marking the 21st consecutive year that Djokovic has won at least one ATP singles title. The win also extends his remarkable winning streak in Beijing to 34 matches. With 102 career titles, Djokovic remains third on the all-time list for men's professional singles titles, trailing only Roger Federer, who has 103, and Jimmy Connors, who holds the record with 109.
Reflecting on the achievement, Djokovic expressed deep pride in his performance, noting that the victory "means more than just a trophy" given the various physical health challenges he has navigated this year. Despite these setbacks, his ability to maintain such high standards of play continues to define the current era of tennis. As the season progresses, his focus remains on maintaining his health and further closing the gap on the all-time title records held by his predecessors.
