Residents across the Greater Accra and Tema regions are set to experience temporary disruptions in essential utility services as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL) embark on critical maintenance exercises. These operations, scheduled for early August, aim to improve infrastructure reliability and address long-standing technical challenges. While the ECG outages are concentrated on a single day, the water supply interruptions will span a three-day period, requiring residents to plan ahead to mitigate the impact on their daily routines.
The Electricity Company of Ghana has scheduled its maintenance works for Monday, August 3, affecting three major administrative regions: Tema, Accra West, and Accra East. In the Tema Region, power supply will be interrupted from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, specifically impacting Communities 19, 20, 22 (TDC Estates), 24, and Jordan City. Meanwhile, residents in the Accra West and Accra East regions will experience longer outages from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Key areas affected include Doblo, Bangalow, Hebron, and Medie in the West, alongside parts of East Legon, Okponglo, and Frafraha in the East. ECG has urged customers in these vicinities to make necessary alternative arrangements for the duration of the works.
Following the power maintenance, Ghana Water Limited will begin a three-day repair project on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines, running from August 6 to August 8. This exercise is critical for the replacement of over 300 meters of deteriorated pipelines, a move intended to enhance the efficiency and reliability of water delivery to the capital. The interruption will affect a broad swathe of the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions, including Gbetsele, Ashaiman, and the Tema Metropolis. GWL management has advised consumers to store sufficient water in anticipation of the shutdown, promising to provide regular updates as they work toward a swift restoration of service.
These coordinated maintenance efforts highlight the ongoing efforts to bolster Ghana's utility infrastructure. While the temporary loss of power and water poses a challenge to both households and businesses, the utility providers emphasize that these repairs are necessary to prevent unplanned, long-term failures. Residents are encouraged to monitor official communication channels for any changes to the schedules and to remain patient while technical teams work to stabilize the distribution networks in the affected areas.
