West African nations have gathered in Accra for the 2026 ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC) Annual Briefing, aimed at strengthening regional collaboration and advancing gender equality. The three-day session focuses on the implementation of evidence-based policies and data-driven decision-making to foster inclusive development across the sub-region. As the host nation, Ghana is at the forefront of these discussions, showcasing its recent legislative milestones and policy frameworks designed to protect women and vulnerable groups while promoting their active participation in governance.
Central to Ghana’s presentation is the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act of 2024, a landmark piece of legislation that sets ambitious targets for female representation in the country. The Act mandates a 30% threshold for female representation by 2026, with the long-term goal of achieving full gender parity of 50% by 2034. Alongside this Act, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection highlighted the Revised National Gender Policy, which provides a comprehensive roadmap for addressing systemic inequalities and ensuring that gender considerations are mainstreamed across all sectors of the economy.
ECOWAS officials, including Resident Representative Mohammed Lawan Gana and EGDC Director Sandra Oulaté Fattouh, emphasized that regional cooperation is essential for sustainable growth. They noted that the EGDC is committed to coordinating programs that protect women’s rights and provide the necessary tools for economic empowerment. The briefing serves as a platform for member states to share best practices and harmonize their approaches to social protection, ensuring that progress made in one country can serve as a blueprint for others in the West African bloc.
Beyond political representation, the delegates are also addressing critical social challenges that hinder the progress of women and girls, specifically gender-based violence and child marriage. By prioritizing reliable gender data, ECOWAS aims to create more effective interventions to dismantle these barriers. The meeting concludes with a renewed commitment to accelerating gender equality as a core pillar of democratic governance, with participants recognizing that the region's prosperity depends on the full and safe inclusion of all its citizens.
