The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a significant humanitarian donation of US$250,000 (approximately GH₵3 million) to support victims of the devastating floods that recently hit Ghana. Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the pledge, highlighting the regional body’s commitment to providing relief to the thousands of citizens affected by the disaster. The funding comes in response to the severe flooding on June 29, which impacted seven regions, displacing residents and causing significant damage to homes and critical infrastructure.
Minister Ablakwa, speaking on the regional intervention, assured the public that the Foreign Affairs Ministry will facilitate the prompt transfer of these funds to the appropriate relief authorities once they are received. He expressed the government's gratitude to ECOWAS for their solidarity during this challenging period. The donation is intended to bolster ongoing emergency efforts, providing essential supplies and long-term recovery support for communities struggling to rebuild in the wake of the environmental crisis.
Complementing these regional aid efforts, domestic social intervention programs are also being intensified to support other vulnerable populations. In the Akatsi South Municipality, the local assembly has demonstrated its commitment to inclusion by distributing income-generating items valued at GH¢699,804 to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Daniel Dagba led the distribution, providing tricycles and industrial machines to 43 beneficiaries to enhance their economic independence and mobility.
These dual efforts—regional disaster relief from ECOWAS and local support for PWDs—underscore a multi-tiered approach to social welfare and national recovery. MCE Dagba noted that the Akatsi South Assembly is also planning tailored vocational programs and physical infrastructure improvements to ensure long-term safety and accessibility for all citizens. Together, these initiatives reflect a broader national priority to protect and empower vulnerable groups through both international cooperation and local administrative action.
