Baha'i community in Egypt runs out of burial space in major cities

The Baha’i minority in Egypt is facing an urgent crisis as their final remaining burial grounds reach full capacity, leaving families with few options for interring their deceased. While Egypt’s constitution theoretically guarantees freedom of religion, members of the faith in cities such as Alexandria and Port Said report that logistical difficulties and bureaucratic barriers are making it nearly impossible to secure new cemetery land. The shortage of space has left the community in a state of distress, as they are unable to provide traditional and dignified burials for their loved ones.

The shortage of space is particularly acute in Alexandria and Port Said, where significant Baha’i populations reside. Without dedicated land, families are forced to navigate complex administrative processes that often lead nowhere. This lack of burial space is not merely a logistical problem but a symbol of the broader legal and social hurdles the community faces. Members have expressed deep concern over the exhaustion of their current sites, which are historical plots that have served the community for decades but can no longer accommodate new graves.

Beyond the burial crisis, the Baha’i community continues to struggle with official recognition of their personal status. Despite some court rulings that have recognized Baha’i marriages in the past, there has been significant administrative pushback. This often results in complications with personal identification records, birth certificates, and other essential documentation. For many Baha’i couples, the inability to have their marriages legally acknowledged by the state creates a ripple effect of legal instability that affects their children and inheritance rights.

The community's plea is not necessarily for the theological acceptance of their faith by the wider public, but for the recognition of their rights as equal citizens under Egyptian law. The current struggle for burial grounds highlights the gap between constitutional promises and the lived reality of religious minorities in the country. Without government intervention to allocate new cemetery plots or streamline administrative recognition, the Baha’i community remains in a state of legal and logistical limbo, seeking only the dignity of a final resting place.
