Dr. Elikem Oklu urges student nurses to prevent maternal deaths

Dr. Elikem Oklu of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has called on student nurses and midwives to prioritize swift action and effective communication to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. Speaking at a health conference organized by the Mama Cares by Racheal Foundation, Dr. Oklu emphasized that delays in treating medical complications often lead to fatal outcomes that could be avoided through increased vigilance. He urged the next generation of healthcare professionals to remain alert to the critical needs of patients to ensure no life is lost due to negligence.

During his presentation, Dr. Oklu highlighted the vital importance of translating theoretical knowledge into practical clinical action. He stressed that while academic foundations are necessary, the safety of both mothers and newborns depends on the ability of healthcare workers to recognize emergencies and respond without hesitation. The conference also identified effective teamwork and the establishment of robust referral systems as essential components for managing high-risk cases and improving overall health outcomes in Ghana.

Mrs. Racheal Hesse Matey, representing the Mama Cares by Racheal Foundation, also addressed the participants, focusing on the necessity of providing compassionate and respectful maternity care. She underscored the professional and ethical responsibilities of nurses and midwives to offer attentive service, reminding the students that their attitudes are as crucial as their medical skills. By reinforcing the importance of continuous learning and ethical practice, the foundation seeks to empower healthcare workers to provide higher standards of care across the country.

The call for improved maternal health standards comes as a reminder of the high stakes involved in maternity services. By fostering a culture of accountability and proactive care, health advocates hope to see a significant decline in avoidable fatalities. The students were encouraged to uphold the dignity of their profession through dedication and a commitment to patient safety throughout their careers.
