EOCO Apprehends Three for Unauthorized Drone Surveillance During MP's Interrogation

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has apprehended three individuals, including one woman and two men, for operating unauthorized drones over its headquarters in Accra. The incident occurred on October 1, coinciding with the interrogation of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. The MP had reported to the EOCO facility voluntarily, accompanied by his legal counsel, following a warrant issued by the Accra High Court in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct at SIC Life Savings & Loans Company Limited. The investigation specifically addresses potential financial loss to the state, mismanagement of public funds, and money laundering.

Security consultant Dr. Ishmael Norman has strongly condemned the drone incursion, characterizing it as a grave security violation. Dr. Norman emphasized that flying drones over designated security zones like the EOCO headquarters is strictly prohibited under national security protocols. He warned that such actions could be interpreted as an attempt to conduct unauthorized surveillance on sensitive official communications, suggesting that the use of recording devices in such proximity to a high-profile interrogation borders on treasonous behavior and poses a significant risk to national stability and privacy.

The legal repercussions for such a breach are exceptionally severe. According to Dr. Norman, individuals found guilty of violating security protocols around sensitive installations could face imprisonment for up to 30 years. He called on security agencies to treat the matter with the utmost seriousness, noting that the motives behind the drone operation must be thoroughly investigated to determine if there was an intent to interfere with the judicial process or compromise the safety of the facility and its personnel.

While the three suspects remain in custody following their arrest, the broader investigation into the financial mismanagement at SIC Life Savings & Loans continues. This drone incident adds a complex layer of security concern to an already high-stakes legal probe, highlighting the growing challenges of managing consumer drone technology in the vicinity of sensitive government operations. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as both the drone security breach and the underlying financial misconduct cases proceed through the legal system.
