The inaugural Ga Manste Tennis Open Championship has officially commenced at the Accra Sports Stadium, marking a significant milestone in the Ghanaian sporting calendar. Launched by King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the six-day tournament is scheduled to run from October 19 to October 24, 2026. The event is uniquely timed to coincide with the 2026 Homowo festival, blending traditional cultural celebrations with competitive athletic excellence.
The competition structure is designed to be inclusive, featuring men’s and women’s singles matches as well as wheelchair tennis categories. A major attraction of the tournament is a star-studded exhibition match involving prominent figures from Ghana’s sporting history, including former Black Stars captains Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan. Their involvement is expected to boost the profile of the tournament and inspire a new generation of tennis players by drawing on the star power of football icons.
Looking toward the future, the organisers intend for the Ga Manste Tennis Open to become an annual fixture dedicated to nurturing young talent within Ghana and across the broader African continent. Beyond the court, the initiative seeks to establish a lasting legacy through the construction of permanent community tennis courts and the enhancement of sports programs within schools. By providing both the platform for competition and the necessary infrastructure, the tournament aims to foster long-term youth development and increase participation in the sport.
