The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has raised an alarm over a significant surge in new HIV infections within the Bono region, documenting 1,145 new cases between January and May. Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, the GAC Regional Technical Coordinator for the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions, revealed these figures, noting that the virus is spreading at a concerning rate, particularly among vulnerable populations. This spike underscores the ongoing challenges in public health management and the need for intensified regional surveillance.
A detailed breakdown of the data identifies the Sunyani Municipality as the primary hotspot, recording the highest number of infections with 222 cases. This was followed closely by the Berekum Municipality with 184 cases and the Jaman South Municipality with 126 cases. Mr. Bambilla highlighted that these figures represent a troubling trend within the region, suggesting that urban and peri-urban centers are seeing increased transmission rates that require immediate and targeted community-level interventions.
In response to the rising infection rates, the GAC is actively distributing Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a preventative medication designed to significantly reduce the risk of infection for HIV-negative individuals at high risk. Mr. Bambilla emphasized that for those already living with the virus, strict adherence to prescribed medication is crucial for maintaining personal health and suppressing the viral load to prevent further transmission. He further urged the general public to prioritize safety by avoiding unprotected sex and knowing their HIV status through regular testing.
The current situation in the Bono region serves as a critical reminder of the persistence of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Ghana. Health officials are calling for a renewed focus on public awareness campaigns and the elimination of social stigma, which frequently prevents individuals from seeking the necessary testing or life-saving treatment. As the GAC continues its outreach and resource distribution, the success of these public health measures will depend heavily on sustained community cooperation and the accessibility of preventative healthcare across all municipalities.
