Passengers traveling through Accra’s Kotoka International Airport (KIA) can now enjoy a significantly more efficient security process. The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) officially announced on July 11, 2026, the deployment of advanced screening technology at Terminals 2 and 3. This upgrade marks a major shift in airport operations, eliminating the long-standing requirement for travelers to remove laptops, large electronic devices, shoes, and belts during security checks, thereby drastically reducing waiting times and improving the overall passenger experience.
Under the new protocols, passengers can keep their electronic devices and liquids inside their carry-on luggage. While the convenience factor is greatly improved, GACL emphasized that safety remains the top priority. The standard international restriction on liquid container sizes remains in effect, with all liquids, aerosols, and gels required to be in containers of 100 milliliters or less. However, these items no longer need to be separated from the rest of the baggage for scanning. Additionally, the need to remove footwear and belts has been largely removed, though security personnel may still request their removal based on specific security assessments.
To further enhance throughput and reduce terminal congestion, the new system incorporates an automatic tray return feature. This innovation is designed to streamline the repacking process, allowing passengers to quickly move through the security zone without the delays often caused by manual tray handling. GACL has indicated that the technology will be integrated in phases, working alongside existing screening equipment to ensure a smooth transition for both airport staff and international travelers.
This modernization initiative is a continuation of GACL’s strategy to position Accra as a leading aviation hub in the West African sub-region. It follows the successful introduction of the Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record (API/PNR) system in August 2025. By adopting these high-tech solutions, the GACL aims to balance stringent international aviation security standards with a seamless, passenger-friendly experience, setting a new benchmark for airport efficiency in Ghana.
