The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced that the comprehensive renovation of Terminal 2 at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is scheduled for completion by December 2026. This $15 million infrastructure project is a strategic initiative aimed at modernizing the facility to handle both domestic and international traffic, ultimately serving as a vital measure to alleviate the increasing pressure and congestion currently experienced at the airport’s primary international hub, Terminal 3.
The progress update was provided by GACL's Managing Director, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, during an oversight visit by the parliamentary Roads and Transportation Committee. According to Opare, the renovation is being executed in phases to ensure minimal disruption to current airport operations. At present, significant portions of Terminal 2 have already been partitioned to accommodate domestic flight services, allowing for a seamless transition while intensive construction and upgrading work continues on the sections designated for international travel.
This modernization effort is expected to significantly enhance the passenger experience by providing upgraded amenities, improved security features, and more efficient processing areas. By reactivating Terminal 2 for international operations alongside its current domestic functions, the GACL aims to optimize the airport’s overall capacity and operational efficiency. This project aligns with broader national efforts under the administration of President John Mahama to strengthen Ghana’s position as a preferred aviation hub in the West African sub-region, ensuring that the country’s premier gateway can meet growing travel demand through the end of the decade.
