The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has recorded a transformative shift in urban mobility following the launch of a new contra-flow arrangement for the Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service. On its inaugural day, the initiative successfully reduced the arduous morning commute from Adenta to Accra from an average of two and a half hours to a mere 23 minutes. This drastic reduction in transit time served approximately 8,000 passengers during the first morning session alone, signaling a major breakthrough in addressing one of the capital's most persistent traffic bottlenecks.
Under the leadership of Managing Director Awudu Dawuda, GAPTE’s strategy focuses on prioritizing the movement of people over the movement of individual vehicles. The contra-flow system operates by reserving specific lanes for authorized Ayalolo buses against the traditional flow of traffic during peak periods, specifically from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Mr. Dawuda emphasized that the intervention aims to enhance passenger transportation efficiency rather than merely relocating buses. He also noted positive cooperation from short-haul drivers and other road users during the initial rollout, which was critical in maintaining the improved travel times.
The successful implementation of the system relies on a multi-agency collaboration involving the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the Department of Urban Roads. These entities provide the necessary traffic control and infrastructure management to ensure that the dedicated lanes remain clear and safe for the high-capacity buses. Public awareness campaigns are also underway to educate the commuting public on the new lane configurations, ensuring that the transition remains smooth as the system becomes a permanent fixture of the daily commute for residents along the corridor.
Looking forward, the success on the Adenta-Accra corridor provides a blueprint for further traffic management interventions across Greater Accra. By significantly cutting down travel times and improving the efficiency of public transport, authorities hope to encourage more residents to opt for high-capacity buses over private vehicles. This shift is expected to further alleviate general road congestion and improve the overall productivity of the city's workforce. GAPTE indicates that the contra-flow arrangement is expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future as it looks to expand the model to other major transport corridors.
