GAUA Industrial Action Disrupts Academic Activities and Student Registration at University of Cape Coast
•2 min read•1 source
The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has intensified its nationwide industrial action, causing a significant standstill of administrative operations across public universities, most notably at the University of Cape Coast (UCC). This strike, initiated to compel the government to address long-standing labor demands, has severely hampered the commencement of the academic year, leaving many students unable to navigate the essential bureaucratic processes required for their studies. At the University of Cape Coast, the absence of administrative staff has paralyzed critical services, including the orientation and registration of fresh students. The strike's ripple effects are being felt by both new and returning students; for instance, Priscilla Loo, an MPhil candidate, reported being unable to finalize course registrations or obtain transcripts necessary for her academic progress. This administrative vacuum threatens to delay the integration of new students into the university community and disrupts the flow of research and departmental activities. The current impasse follows a series of meetings between GAUA and the Ministry of Education which failed to produce a satisfactory resolution. GAUA leadership has indicated that previous discussions were inconclusive, prompting the decision to maintain the strike until their demands are fully met. The association remains firm in its stance, emphasizing that the welfare and contractual rights of university administrators must be prioritized before normal operations can resume. As the academic calendar hangs in the balance, there is increasing pressure on the government to find a swift resolution to the dispute. If the strike persists, it could lead to a significant backlog in administrative duties and potentially force a revision of the entire academic schedule. Students and faculty alike are awaiting a breakthrough in negotiations to prevent further erosion of the quality and efficiency of Ghana’s higher education system.
