Researchers at Ghana Communication Technology University Propose 'Interpretive Fluency' to Curb AI Dependency in Education

Researchers from the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) have highlighted the critical need for a pedagogical shift in how Artificial Intelligence (AI) outputs are interpreted across academic and professional landscapes. In a comprehensive study, Dr. Derrick Kwaku Antwi, Dr. Marvin Nana Annan, and Dr. Muntala Mohammed explore the evolving role of generative AI, arguing that its integration into society demands more than technical proficiency. Instead, they call for the cultivation of 'Interpretive Fluency'—the ability to critically read, critique, and contextualize AI-generated information rather than accepting it at face value.

The study identifies a growing risk of 'Output Dependency' within the classroom, where students often view AI as an authoritative source rather than a supplementary learning accelerator. While AI can significantly enhance the learning process, the researchers warn that overreliance can lead to a lack of critical assessment. In this educational setting, AI is frequently used as a tutoring tool, yet without the necessary interpretative skills, students may fail to recognize the probabilistic nature of the information provided, potentially compromising the depth of their academic work and personal intellectual development.

In contrast to the classroom environment, the researchers note that AI application in public research and professional settings carries significantly higher stakes. In these contexts, AI must be treated as a 'probabilistic assistant' requiring rigorous external validation. The paper emphasizes the 'Human Agency Principle,' asserting that humans must remain the ultimate adjudicators of AI-generated content. This approach ensures that data privacy, ethical standards, and authorial responsibility are maintained, as inaccuracies in public-facing research can have far-reaching consequences that AI cannot be held accountable for.

To bridge this interpretative divide, the GCTU scholars advocate for systemic educational reforms that prioritize critical engagement with technology. They argue that the success of AI integration hinges not on the technology itself, but on the human ability to validate and contextualize its outputs. By embedding these ethical and interpretative frameworks into the Ghanaian educational system, institutions can ensure that students and researchers remain masters of their intellectual contributions, preserving academic integrity in an increasingly automated world.
