GETFund and Municipal Assemblies Accelerate Educational Infrastructure Drive with Major Projects in Achimota, Bolgatanga, and Yilo Krobo

Infrastructure and resource gaps in Ghana’s education sector are receiving significant attention through a combination of local assembly investments and strategic private partnerships. From the construction of new classroom blocks in the Upper East Region to the provision of essential furniture in the Eastern Region and a multi-million cedi dormitory at Achimota School, the government and its partners are working to enhance the learning environment. These initiatives, spearheaded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and various Municipal Assemblies, align with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to improving educational access and quality nationwide.

In the Bolgatanga Municipality, the Assembly has leveraged the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) to embark on several critical infrastructure projects costing over GH₵700,000 each. These include new Kindergarten blocks at Yorogo Gaabisi and Aperiga Dorongo, and a three-unit Junior High School (JHS) facility at Kolgu Agusi. Additionally, the Assembly is completing a JHS block in Basiengo equipped with an ICT laboratory and library. Municipal Chief Executive Roland Ayoo Atanga noted that these projects respond directly to community needs and the NDC’s agenda to boost school enrollment. Similarly, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly has distributed hundreds of desks and teacher furniture sets to its Education Directorate to address a pressing furniture deficit, funded by the DACF’s 10% allocation for basic schools.

Parallel to these local government efforts, the GETFund has launched a GH₵18.7 million project at Achimota School for a 250-bed boys' dormitory. This project is a flagship of the Education Financing and Partnership Initiative (EFPI), fully funded by alumnus Ebenezer Kwadwo Saka Addo-Mensah of Saka Homes. During the sod-cutting ceremony, the President of the Old Achimotan Association, Joel Edmund Nettey, called on the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Ministry of Education to provide tangible incentives for such private donors. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and GETFund Administrator Paul Adjei emphasized that expanding resources is vital as student populations grow, with GETFund aiming to mobilize at least $250 million for future infrastructure.

These collective efforts signal a shift toward a more sustainable model of educational funding that blends public revenue with private philanthropy. As the Bolgatanga and Yilo Krobo assemblies move to hand over completed facilities to the Ghana Education Service, the focus remains on ensuring that improved physical environments translate into better academic outcomes. The call for donor incentives and the commitment to regular furniture supplies suggest a long-term strategy to not only build schools but also maintain and equip them for modern educational standards under the current administration.
