Victor Emmanuel Smith, Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S., has called for the prioritization of youth employment as a crucial national security strategy. Speaking at an economic summit in Pennsylvania with Senator Scott Martin, he highlighted the pressing need to create job opportunities domestically to combat the adverse effects of the U.S. immigration system on young Ghanaians. Smith warned that the lack of local employment drives migration, exposing youth to potential dangers and legal challenges abroad. He emphasized that meaningful job creation in Ghana could serve as a deterrent against illegal migration.
The ambassador also discussed the importance of achieving food sovereignty, particularly by reducing reliance on rice imports through enhanced agricultural practices. He advocated for partnerships with U.S. states like Pennsylvania to leverage agricultural expertise, marking a significant shift in Ghana’s economic diplomacy towards investment-led growth. This approach aims to position Ghana as a gateway for American businesses looking to enter the African market, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Smith's remarks reflect a broader strategy to address both economic challenges and migration issues facing Ghanaian youth.
