The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has commissioned a new group of elite soldiers following the graduation of 20 personnel from the Special Operations Forces Basic Course 5-26. The ceremony, held at Gondar Barracks in Accra on October 16, 2026, represents a strategic enhancement of the military’s capacity to handle high-stakes security operations. These graduates have undergone rigorous training designed to prepare them for the complexities of modern unconventional warfare and internal security maintenance. Speaking at the event, the Acting Chief of the Army Staff, Brigadier General Franklyn Kwasi Agbebo, underlined the vital importance of specialized units in the current global and regional security climate. He stated that special operations forces are now more essential than ever for addressing emerging threats, specifically highlighting the need for robust counterterrorism measures and enhanced border security. General Agbebo charged the personnel to remain steadfast in their commitment to the nation, emphasizing that discipline and professional conduct must remain their guiding principles throughout their service in the elite unit. Adding to the significance of the occasion, Brigadier General Richard Kainyi Mensah, Commander of the Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB), noted that the brigade continues to achieve excellence both locally and internationally. He proudly cited the ASOB’s silver medal performance at the 2026 Cambrian Patrol in the United Kingdom, an achievement that demonstrates the world-class standard of training provided to Ghanaian special forces. This international recognition serves as a testament to the resilience and tactical proficiency of the personnel under his command. As the Ghana Armed Forces continues to modernize its operational capabilities, the Army Special Operations Brigade is already looking toward its next recruitment cycle. General Mensah announced that assessments for the subsequent Special Operations Forces Basic Course will commence shortly. In a move toward greater inclusivity within the elite ranks, he specifically encouraged female personnel within the GAF to apply for the upcoming course, signaling a commitment to diversifying the specialized units as they prepare for future national security demands.
