The Ghana International Book Fair has initiated a pioneering outreach program titled "Reading with Everyone" at the bustling Makola Market in Accra. This campaign marks a strategic shift in literacy advocacy, moving beyond the traditional confines of classrooms and libraries to meet Ghanaians in their daily environments. Led by Executive Director Yvonne Bosman, the initiative seeks to normalize leisure reading as a daily habit for all citizens, regardless of their profession or social background. By taking the campaign to one of the city's busiest commercial hubs, organizers hope to demonstrate that reading is a flexible activity that can be integrated into any lifestyle.
During the outreach at Makola, organizers engaged directly with market traders, shoppers, and workers through interactive reading activities and the distribution of books donated by various publishers. Bosman emphasized that the ability to engage with literature should not be restricted by one’s location or busy schedule. The campaign successfully drew significant interest from market women and laborers, fostering spontaneous discussions on how reading can serve as a vital tool for personal development and economic empowerment. These sessions allowed participants to interact with books in a low-pressure environment, breaking down barriers to literacy that often exist in more formal settings.
This market-based outreach serves as a vital precursor to the 23rd Ghana International Book Fair, which is officially scheduled to take place from August 27 to 30, 2026. Operating under the theme "Transforming Ghana’s Future Through Books," the upcoming fair will expand on these community efforts with a comprehensive program featuring book exhibitions, workshops, and a national reading competition. By targeting both the youth and the general public through diverse engagement strategies and interactions with prominent personalities, the organizers aim to inspire a renewed culture of reading that will underpin the nation's educational and social progress.
