The Ghana Chamber of Mines has donated relief items valued at approximately GH"2 million to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to provide essential aid to victims of the June 29 floods and other recent natural disasters. The donation, presented at a ceremony on January 7, 2025, aims to alleviate the suffering of displaced families whose lives and livelihoods have been severely disrupted by the deluge. This initiative underscores the mining industry’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and national welfare during times of crisis.
The relief package includes a comprehensive range of essential supplies, such as mattresses, blankets, food items including rice, boots, personal hygiene products, and personal protective equipment. While presenting the items, the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ing. Ken Ashigbey, emphasized that the donation reflects the chamber’s dedication to responsible mining practices and proactive corporate citizenship. He noted that while floods are natural occurrences, human activities have significantly exacerbated their impact, highlighting the urgent need for more sustainable environmental practices across the country.
Receiving the items on behalf of the government, the Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Telarbi, commended the Chamber for its timely intervention. He acknowledged the scale of the devastation, noting that the floods have not only displaced households but also interrupted the education of many children. Telarbi assured the public that the relief aid would be distributed fairly to the most affected populations and called for a collective effort in disaster management, urging other corporate entities and faith-based organizations to follow the Chamber’s lead.
Beyond immediate relief, Ing. Ken Ashigbey advocated for increased investment in disaster management infrastructure to better prepare for future events. The call for improved infrastructure and robust urban planning was echoed as a necessary step to mitigate the recurring cycle of flood-induced destruction. As NADMO begins the distribution process, the partnership between the private sector and government remains a critical pillar in building national resilience against environmental challenges.
